About Autism and Applied Behavior

About Autism:

  • Autism is a neurological disorder, with no clear etiology, that is typically diagnosed by the age of 3
  • Autism includes three areas of observed deficits: impaired social interactions, delayed or no communication; and stereotyped/repetitive patterns of behavior
  • 1 in every 166 children is diagnosed with autism (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2003)

What is Applied Behavior Analysis?

  • The application of learning and behavior principles to teach skills in a variety of educational areas while treating and improving challenging behaviors that interfere with learning
  • A science that focuses on the functional relationship between behaviors and the environmental events associated with those behaviors
  • The measurement and analysis of behaviors to determine if teaching and treatment are resulting in progress across specific skill areas and/or resulting in a decrease in challenging behavior
  • The most documented and researched approach that has been shown to be effective in teaching students with autism
