Mary Merrick

For over fifty years, Mary Merrick provided extraordinary service, advocacy, and generous support to The Ivymount School. Mary passed away last week, after a life well lived.

Starting in 1961, when Ivymount School was called Christ Church Child Center, Mary was a volunteer, both in the classroom and later in the school office. She was elected to the school's very first Board of Directors. Her board tenure included serving as Board President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

Through her advocacy and leadership, Mary helped develop an awareness of the need for comprehensive special education services and an understanding of how Ivymount was addressing that need. One of Mary's most repeated quotes was, "I have always said, there is 'no other place' like Ivymount."

We are grateful for Mary's years of extraordinary service in helping create Ivymount as we know it today. “When I became the second Director of Ivymount School in 1997, Mary Merrick was the board member and friend I turned to for sound judgement and good advice. She loved Ivymount and was instrumental in ensuring its continued success," remembers former School Director Jan Wintrol. "Her name is forever linked to Ivymount and she will always be in the hearts of all that were privileged to know and work with her.”

Among Mary's many contributions to the school was to attract her daughter (Mary Merrick) and her daughter-in-law (Lu Merrick) to establish their careers at Ivymount, where each has spent more than thirty years.

On Thursday, May 28, a virtual celebration of Mary's life will be held. For more information, visit:
